How to Build a Small Paver Patio: A DIY Guide for Castle Rock Homeowners

Phase 1: Planning to Learn How to Build a Paver Patio


  1. Mark Your Area: Use stakes and string to outline the desired size and shape of your patio.

  2. Excavation: Dig out the area to a depth of about 7–9 inches (this accounts for 4–6 inches of base material, 1 inch of sand, and the thickness of your pavers).

  3. Check for Utilities: Before you dig, ensure you know where your underground utility lines area.


Phase 2: The Base (Crucial Step!)


  1. Compact the Soil: Ensure the subgrade is firm.

  2. Add Base Material: Fill with crushed aggregate (road base). Add it in 2-inch layers, compacting each layer thoroughly with a plate compactor.

  3. Create Slope: Ensure your patio slopes slightly away from your home’s foundation to prevent water pooling.


Phase 3: Bedding & Pavers


  1. Screed the Sand: Lay down 1 inch of concrete sand. Use a straight 2x4 board to screed it perfectly level. Do not compact the sand bed after screeding.

  2. Lay Pavers: Place your pavers in your desired pattern, starting from a straight edge.

  3. Edge Restraint: Install edging around the perimeter to lock the pavers in place.

  4. Sweep & Compact: Sweep polymeric sand into the joints, then run the plate compactor over the surface to set the pavers.
